Can we all just get along?

More from the Chronicle of Higher Education on peace talks between higher ed officials & school leaders over the issue of who's to blame for unsatisfactory student performance.

Higher-education officials have complained that too many students arrive at college unprepared, increasing the length of time and cost required to earn a degree, and leading to lower retention and graduation rates. School administrators say teacher preparation at the college level focuses too heavily on theory and too little on practice and subject-matter expertise.

Lurching toward authentic assessment: Stories from the battlefield

From the Chronicle of Higher Education, news of ongoing efforts to improve the assessment of teacher training programs. From the article:

Before long, nearly every state should have the capacity to do the kinds of analysis that Louisiana has done, tracing schoolchildren's academic performance back to their teachers' teachers.

To many observers, these databases are a long-overdue step toward a real understanding of the quality of higher education.

But other people say poorly designed analyses might do more harm than good. The standardized tests that underlie these reports are themselves controversial, of course. Beyond that, some education deans worry that states will crunch the numbers in crude ways that misidentify teachers' effects on their students.

Academic outcomes of study abroad

Study abroad is one of those high-impact educational practices that we're hearing so much about. At least we're hearing so much about how we need to be providing them for our students.
